Slouchy hats don’t really suit me, I find they’re too deep for my head. Enter the Fountain hat, it’s got slouch to spare but it’s not much deeper than a normal hat. It’s infinitely variable and uses only 220 yards so it’s stashbusty to boot.
Fountain Hat
- Yarn: 2 skeins Noro Kureyon (#211)
- Needles: US 6, US 15, US 8 (this can vary and I highly suggest an interchangeable needle set for this pattern as quite a few different sized needles help bridge the gap between US 6 and US 15)
- Gauge: 3 sts/in on largest needles (gauge not really important)
Cast on 96 stitches on US 6 needles. Join for working in the round. Work in 1×1 ribbing (*k1, p1*) until hat measures 1.5″ from cast on edge. Switch to larger needles (I had to use US 8, 10.5 and 13 over several rows to get the stitches large enough to go on US 15s) and work one increase row as follows: *k2, yo*, repeat to end. Work in stockinette stitch (knitting every round) until hat measures 6″ from increase row. Switch to US 8 needles and work decreases as follows:
- *k2, k2tog* for one row
- knit 4 rows plain
- *k2, k2tog* until 10 stitches remain
Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in ends. Wear with aplomb.
